An Old Friends Passing

I found out an old friend passed away on the 29th. John Menzo was someone I met back in my University Days and was a longtime life partner to a good friend of mine for 13 years. My heart felt sympathies go out to his friends and loved ones.

Menzo, John. John passed away peacefully on August 29, 2010 at Hospice Wellington, Guelph, surrounded by many of his loved ones and in Mauricio’s, his partner’s, arms. Born in Amsterdam in 1950, John lived at his family’s Arkell Road property since 1960. John lived a full, dynamic life, travelling the world and teaching in many places including Malawi, Inuvik, China, and Kuala Lumpur. Since 1990, John’s students and collegues at Guelph Collegiate have appreciated his dedication as a teacher and role model. So many will miss him greatly: his dear partner Mauricio (Ramon) Perez De la Paz, his brother Bill Menzo and wife Diane, nieces Christie and Lauren, all of the Perez De la Paz family, John’s family in Holland, Birgit, Torben and Tove Hansen, Aline Cool, the Bard family as well as new found friends in his second home in Uruguay. In celebration of John’s life, a visitation will be held at John and Mauricio’s home at 190 Arkell Road, Guelph on Thursday, September 2nd from 2 until 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the John Menzo Humanitarian Award (cheques payable to Upper Grand Learning Foundation – 500 Victoria Rd. N. Guelph, ON N1E 6K2) or Hospice Wellington (519) 822-6660 will be gratefully accepted (cards are available at the funeral home 519-821-5077 or send condolences at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com).
